If there’s one thing I love it’s a good market. And hitting up new places I’ve never been to before. And large wheels of cheese. So, three things really- and Borough Market on Saturday ticked all the boxes.
I’d been meaning to visit for a while after hearing rave reviews, and what better occasion than a visit from my old friend and housemate Chloe? We were truly spoilt for choice: huge cavernous halls filled with bread, cheese, meat, cake… bustling stalls selling anything for lunch from scallops to pork belly, from Bratwurst to Vietnamese curry… and people milling about with plastic glasses of bubbly and ultra-gooey chocolate fudge brownies.
Obviously Clo and I were shamelessly running around making the most of free tasters before getting down to the serious business of lunch, which after much deliberation was a paella for me and curry for her before halving a ginormous brownie.
As you know I’m a big advocate of French markets- being part of the weekly tradition is the thing I loved most about living in Paris. But for pure atmosphere and quota of coolness alone I have to say London has the edge here. Blasphemous, I know- désolée France!
If you’re not a fan of big crowds though I’d definitely say avoid the weekends! It’s open 10am-3pm Monday-Wednesday and 12-6pm Thursdays and Fridays. A must for any discerning foodie in the capital.
Chorizo Ciabatta with poached red peppers, wild rocket and olive oil is my favourite from borough market!
